Louis (centre) with 5 of winning photos and the judges.

I was involved in computing from the days of the first Mac (my own company, since sold) and I've also had a printing/design company (sold) and now I am in photography/film.

This page is a link to my photography business (portraiture), documentary photography and personal sites around the web plus links to websites of interest to filmmakers looking for non USA Festivals. My films are about ordinary people as are my photographs. I have written and directed 2 short films and my comments on festivals are based on my own hit/miss experiences over the last two years.

Please forgive me the above photo but at least you can see what I look like (if we've met it'll help remind you who I was). There is absolutely far too much info here but it will hopefully answer a few questions about who I am and what interests me.

Personal/Documentary Photography Sites

  • I have won various awards nationally and internationally for my photos and films and I've had a few big solo exhibitions of my work "The Northern Family". The images are in the various sets I've put up in Flickr, I've included an intro on the project with the images in flickr. Here and Here.
  •
  • N.Ireland is infamous for violence, I decided to try and document ordinary life. I get disheartened with the attitude of 'Arts' people but the public like them, so that is OK. My hope is to have a selection from the numerous portfolios of "The Northern Family" curated as a separate exhibition to show outside N.Ireland.

  • I love travel and meeting people and there are lots of stories related to my photography and I put a few up with the relevant individual images Here. I often send copies of the photos back to the people I meet on my travels but I would like to do a doc on me going back with images to trace the people and give them the images personally. (I'd also like to take more photos and create an exhibition from the doc.) You'll see what I mean from the stories. (Cuba story Here)
  • Flickr Here and Photonet (my first web presence which I have left up as it has hundreds of comments from others from around the world on my photos. I rarely visit it now.) Here.

Films

I have made 2 short films. They have been more successful than I could ever have dreamt.

  • If you want to see my intros to my two Shorts at the preview screening of Call Me Son (2008) in Belfast then here is a link to videos a friend made at the screening (link to youtube). Here.

Festivals

I've been asked a lot about festivals in Europe (outside USA actually). So here are some good links to the festivals which are mostly free to enter or maybe $15 max.

I have been to very few festivals but the stand out ones are Cork(Ire), FilmStock(Eng) and Phoenix(USA). Galway is also pretty good, other festivals who have had good reports and who were very helpful to me are Heart of Gold(Australia) and ReelHeART (Can) who screened The Morning News last year and this June (2009) are screening Call Me Son. I hope to be there. Links for all of them are below.

To enter festivals I recommend using the following websites which work like Withoutabox but no where near as costly.

  • Shortfilmdepot. Free entry to fests in Iran, Japan, Brazil, Germany, Italy etc. Here.
  •
  •
  • Reelport. Mostly free entries to festivals around the world. They have very low charges for their services but allow you to set up details of 3 shorts absolutely free. They also require you to either download your film or send them a DVD which they then digitise (and rights manage) so that festivals can view your film on line (or download it). Once set up it is incredibly easy to submit your film to a fest. I've only just started using this and I had to send them a dvd as the upload didn't work for my second short. Here.
  •
  •
  • Withoutabox Has a very active messageboard section for all your questions. Here.
  •

Most other European festivals work through written submissions (entry form downloaded from website) or online submission via their own website.

In general they are not too good about contacting you and many will not contact you if you are not selected. Some discourage contact, require premiere status or only screen international films if they are 35mm. Some have huge entries of 1,000s of shorts so the competition is very stiff.
